“VEC91” - VOERE's eco friendly becomes 20.
The first hunting rifle worldwide using electrical ignition and caseless ammunition produced in quantities celebrates its 20th birthday.
The incredible efficiency and accuracy of the electronic rifle is a result of the very short locktime. The ignition is around a factor 10 faster than the traditionional mechanichal ignition and does not cause any disturbing vibrations right before the bullet starts to go on it's way. Our caseless ammunition is not effected by enviromental influences like rain, snow, heat or cold conditions at all.
Caseless Ammunition
Caseless ammunition has been around for a very long time. In fact every muzzle loader fires caseless ammunition. The case of todays ammunition seals off the rifle and to hold the components together in a relatively sturdy package.
New developments like VOERE's UCC ammunition try to substitute the powder by solid explosives. Thus the sealing has to be accomplished by the firearm, instead of the case. This causes certain difficulties but also big advantages like higher accuracy.
When a rifle is fired pressures around 5.000 bar occur, what has to be sealed dynamicaly hence any sealing needs to be rather complex.
In fact the term caseless ammunition is wrong, the correct term would be ammunition with combustible case.

VEC91 The first Hunting Rifle to combine Caseless Ammunition and Electronic Firing!
Caseless Ammunition UCC
During the seventies construction tool producer HILTI started a project to develop a nail pistol that wouldn't leave any litter on the construction lot. One of the projects design engineers, Herbert Uhsel, wanted to further develop this nail gun into a real rifle firing caseless ammunition as the idea has proven to work on the nail gun, but eventually didn't make it into serial production.
PSE bought the rights on the patents and asked VOERE to develop a rifle to fire the caseless ammunition, while PSE would produce the ammunition. The rifle was presented to the public on IWA Show in 1991 and immediately received a overwhelming positive response by the gun media. Thanks to it's revolutionary technology the VEC91 featured extraordinary precision, short locktime, a very high degree of safety, cut down on expensive brass, etc.
However, after a short while it became quite evident that PSE was not able to produce the ammunition neither in sufficient numbers nor quality. Thus VOERE started a small-scale production in Kufstein, which is a far from ideal place to produce ammunition. Yet no established ammunition manufacturer wanted to step-in as they actually are case producers and assemblers for the most part, hence they had little interest in caseless ammunition.
VEC91 Rifle
Heckler & Koch is known for the first rifle firing caseless ammunition - the H&K G11. This design has the crucial disatvantages of it's squarish ammunition which leads to great heat in the chambers edges resulting in cook-offs. Sealing Problems caused by the mechanical ignition occured as well.
In contrast to that VOERE opted for a cylindric cartridge design and electronic firing. However, when starting with the project, the prototype rifle could not even hit the target at 50m! The break through came with the invention of the enlarged gas capacity chamber, to allow the gases to expand in first place. Then the entire design was refined by the Israeli firearms designer Nehemia Sirkis to a degree where it outshined every hunting rifle so far. The existing world record in benchrest shooting could be halved with a heavy barrel VEC91.
The project was and still is way ahead of it's time. The rifle featured a electronic safety System which made it not only safe but childproof. The VEC91 eventually failed because we couldn't provide worldwide ammunition supply in sufficient numbers. The future development will lead towards electronic firing working with both, traditional cased and caseless ammunition, resulting in the use of completely different ammunition designs used by the military and civilian users.
